Cast In-Place

Cast-in-place technique This approach involves concrete which is deposited in the place where it is required to harden as part of the structure, as opposed to precast concrete. The technique requires the use of various formwork materials to form the walls, columns, beams etc.., and pouring premixed concrete between the removable forms to build complete walls in-place.

Cast-in-place technique uses – include most foundations and slabs-on-ground, walls, beams, columns, floors, roofslabs, as well as large portions of bridges, pavements, and other infrastructure.

Cast-in-place technique benefits – include durability &structural support, efficiency - less time and labour cost required - and a more consistent finish.

Tilt Wall

Tilt-Wall technology (“Tilt-up”) – In a tilt-up construction project, the building's walls are poured directly at the jobsite in large slabs of concrete called "tilt-up panels" or "tilt-wall panels".  Steel, electrical, and other installations are “formed” directly into the panels before the concrete is poured.  After the poured concrete has cured, these panels are then raised into position around the building's perimeter forming the exterior walls.

Tilt-Wall technology (“Tilt-up”) is mostly used for large scale housing developments and commercial structures.

Tilt-Wall technology benefits include flexibility, efficiency, cost effectiveness.  The approach also helps building to improve performance during hurricanes and earthquakes.

Block & Steel Technique

“Block & Steel” technique is a traditional type of building construction widely used in Jamaica and the Caribbean. It involves using 6-inch, 8-inch or 4-inch concrete blocks to form walls. Jamaica and the Caribbean has strict protocols around the placement of steel (placed vertically and horizontally) between the blocks. Block “pockets” are also filled with concrete and allowed to cure. In some parts of the world, block pockets may be filled with insulation instead of concrete.

“Block & Steel” technique is the most widely used building system in Jamaica and the Caribbean.  It is used in both commercial and residential construction to build houses, warehouses, offices, retaining walls, and boundary walls, etc.  The technique can also be used with both the cast-in-place and tilt-wall techniques; block & steel are often used to construct partition walls within a tilt-wall structure.

“Block & Steel” technique benefits include strength and resilience (compared to wood).  Block & steel structures are also cost effective and, due to the relative simplicity of the technique, there is usually greater access to available labour supply.
